Surprising Few, Italy’s Government Collapses

After the government fell briefly in February 2007, it collapsed fatally on Monday, after Mr. Prodi's former justice minister, Clemente Mastella, withdrew the three votes he controlled in the Senate. That left Mr. Prodi without a majority there.

But rather than resign immediately, Mr. Prodi, 68, a former economics professor and European Commission president, demanded confidence votes in the two houses of Parliament. Although he won a vote in the lower chamber on Wednesday, it seemed unlikely from the start that he could ultimately survive.

So the confidence votes turned into something like a two-day wake, with Mr. Prodi — whose sober and high-minded demeanor is often compared to that of a parish priest — presiding over his own government's funeral.

On Thursday he told senators it was not "stubbornness" that caused him to press the confidence votes, but a desire to underline publicly each lawmaker's responsibility to make reforms that he said were "urgently needed."

He strongly defended his government's accomplishments, including a modest increase in economic growth — starting from zero — and said Italy needed "continuity" to make real change.

Gazans Flood Egypt After Border Breach

Local money changers began charging extra to change Israeli shekels into dollars, as Gazans were using the U.S. currency in Egypt.

Crowds waited along roads in Gaza City, trying to catch rides to the border. Taxi driver Mahmoud Abu Ouda made one trip to Rafah, but stopped because he had no more fuel.

"The city is empty of cabs. They are all in Rafah," he said.

We have told the members of our vast studio audience here tonight that we cannot allow applause or any outbursts following the candidates' responses.

We will open with a Q&A format, allowing for 90-second answers, lights will alert the candidates to the end of time; some 30-second answers; and then follow-ups at the moderator's discretion.

Finally, for tonight's debate of the top three Democratic contenders, I am joined by my partner Tim Russert, our Washington bureau chief and of course moderator of “Meet the Press" on NBC; and Natalie Morales of “Today" on NBC, who will be handling some of the thousands of e-mail questions we've received over the past few days directed to the candidates.

Dallas, I love you, but I've found Austin

Over here, in the corner, is Charlie Hatley, whaling away. "Unhhhhhhhhhhh," he groans, jaw slack. The boxing dummy bucks, sways, threatens to fall over from Hatley's blows. The kids outside the ring stare, saucer-eyed. They love Hatley, 19, the superstar of the place, ranked second in the nation at 141 pounds and a seven-time national champion so good, so quick, so ferocious, the guy Hatley was supposed to fight for the gold at an international amateur tournament in Puerto Rico three weeks ago instead backed out. .

Payday lending group tries clearer disclosure

The payday lending industry has been under a lot of scrutiny in Ohio and around the country in recent months.

On Thursday, a group representing about 60 percent of the country's payday lenders announced a new initiative it believes will address the criticism.

The Community Financial Services Association of America will now require each member of its organization to post their fees and rates on posters at least 18 inches by 22 inches in area with type at least half an inch tall.

“We have an obligation to make sure our customers understand how much the payday advance will cost before they enter into the transaction," said D. Lynn DeVault, the president-elect of the association.

Payday lenders always have been required to provide that information, but the new requirements will make it even more obvious to potential borrowers, DeVault said.
