Spurs get green light to talk to £7m Woodgate

Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on Middlesbrough defender Jonathan Woodgate after having an offer of more than 7million accepted.

Spurs have been given permission to talk to the 28-year-old England international as they attempt to push home their nterest in him.

They have been trailing the former Leeds player for some time and have now made their move with a bid which is believed to top the 7million Boro paid Real Madrid to secure his services last summer.

Their approach comes after weeks of speculation linking the North London club with the Teessiders' England winger Stewart Downing.

Spurs will hope to tie up their swoop for a player who was heavily linked with former club Newcastle earlier this week as Boro continue their own pursuit of Heerenveen's Brazilian striker Afonso Alves.

Chasing Perfection (It ain't over yet)

It has been a wild year for Bill Belichick's club. They were punished by the NFL for cheating after a win over the New York Jets in Week 1 and since that time, they have been on a mission.

After a busy off-season the Pats upgraded their passing attack and the results have been impressive. The combination of Pro Bowl starters Tom Brady and Randy Moss has been outstanding. Brady was named The Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year and also broke Peyton Manning's single season TD pass record (click here for the Brady TD Pass Tracker) and Moss broke Jerry Rice's single season TD reception record. Now it's on to the playoffs.

Heidi Hodges Column: It’s a good world the way it is

Ilike the world and the way it is, said my 8-year-old son absentmindedly. He was putting together a puzzle, and, as usual, turning things over in his mind.

What do you mean? I asked.

Everything, he said. How nature works. How humans think. How we have a moon. Stuff like that.

Thats a lot of ground to cover.

It was our last day housesitting at the farm. At the moment, I was on a chair, taking a break from packing up, and having plenty of thoughts myself.

First of all, I was looking forward to not doing chores anymore.

The simple life is not that simple, really. Its hard work, and Im not really cut out for it. Not for the long term, anyway.

A couple of months? Sure. But a lifetime? Well, let me just say I admire farmers even more than I did before.

Bernie Weill, Brooklyn, N.Y.: Can I deduct losses on my house destroyed by a fire during 2005, although I have not yet settled with the insurance company as of Dec. 31, 2005?

SC&H Group: Generally, you can deduct a casualty loss only in the tax year in which the casualty occurred. To determine your deduction for a casualty or theft loss, you must first figure your loss.

Crop under curse

Associate professor Dr S.S Bhardwaj at Bajaura centre of Dr Y.S Parmar University of Forestry and Horticulture-Nauni said the officials had visited the scab-effected area in Mandi and have directed the department of horticulture there to conduct a camp in Janjheli. The farmers are advised to spray urea to destroy the leaves so that they are decomposed. Otherwise, the fungus remains dormant in the soil and spreads in the rest of the area, he cautions. The 1980s problem of scab is now showing up in certain pockets in Mandi and Barshani area in Kullu.

He also suggested ways of controlling the situation. The scab-infected fruit should be destroyed to control the spread of fungus. A farmers meet will be organised at Bajaura in the second week of the month to know the problems of the farmers in the central region, he said.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Whitman is seriously thinking about retirement after a decade at the helm. That's a lifetime among Internet companies. For instance, Yahoo has been through three CEOs in the last decade. John Donahoe, who leads eBay's auction unit, is the front runner to succeed Whitman.

What's Whitman's departure mean? Big changes are coming. A few hints of how big these changes are will come Wednesday when eBay reports its fourth quarter earnings.
