Management & Training Corp. was awarded a contract from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice this week for an additional 1,300 beds at its East Texas Intermediate Sanction Facility located on Industrial Drive in Henderson. The five-and-a-half year contract is valued at about $120 million and goes into effect March 1, MTC warden Michael Bell said. The increase in beds is expected to add 367 jobs at the facility that opened last year and increase the facility's annual budget to around $25 million, said Bell.

Currently, MTC is housing probation and parole violators at its Henderson facility. Bell said the additional 1,300 beds would be for treatment of substance abuse. "It's all related to treatment," he said.

Layton pushing for federal election

You seem to assume that all Liberal voters are left of center; simply not the case.

In fact for the majority of Liberal voters the CPC is their second choice just as the Liberals are the second choice for most CPC voters. Posted 23/01/08 at 11:23 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment .

Symphony falls short of celestial height in performances of Messiaen ...

Technical difficulties arose immediately, during the first movement of the Messiaen. This is an extended, very slow chorale for brass that unfolds in discrete phrases separated by silences. And although the sound of the brass playing itself was resplendent, not one phrase in the entire movement - not one! - began together.

The last of the work's four movements is an answering chordal rhapsody, this time from the strings, and although the lapses in coordination were less marked, it was obvious again that the players were simply guessing about the rhythms. And so what should be a radiant tapestry of sound became something more like a slippery throw rug, sliding this way and that as the music wore on.

There were greater pleasures to be had in the two central movements, especially the woodwind-driven second movement with its sinuous echoes of Debussy's "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun." But here too a veil of tentativeness hung over the entire proceedings.

Oil giants' barrels gushing over with profit

But the figures still left one trader somewhat underwhelmed: "As much as the figures are good, they're not amazing." Still, with Royal Dutch Shell (RDS), ExxonMobile and ConocoPhillips all due to announce fat profits before the end of the week, the creaking door-frame could be reduced to matchwood by Friday night. The figures relating to oil industry profits are staggering. According to a report earlier this year from Merrill Lynch, the world's 70 biggest oil groups are on course to report a total net income of almost £132.5bn for 2005 - which, if looked at on a profit-per second basis, works out at just under £7300, or about one-third of the UK average annual wage. To put another perspective on that, the total is almost as much as the entire Polish economy, according to Bloomberg. Tomorrow, RDS is expected to detail interim profits of about £3.1bn, while brokers at Credit Suisse First Boston see BP's main rival for the oil industry crown (based on revenues), ExxonMobile, weighing in with a hefty rise in half-year earnings to £4.6bn.

'Gosh, I'm Bitchy Today'

It did not present a realistically scary picture of modern American corporate culture. (Do you really think lawyers would kill for, say, Monsanto? I don't.) On the other hand, this is a truly terrifying picture of modern American corporate culture. ... 1:07 A.M.

In case you missed Joe Wilson's assh .... I mean, Joe Wilson's Joe Wilson moment on 60 Minutes:

Mr. JOE WILSON: It was a Mafia-like tactic. And the idea of going after your family, even in Washington, was an outrage. Nobody went after Karl Rove's family, nobody went after "Scooter" Libby's family. They went after my family.

COURIC: In all fairness, Karl Rove's wife doesn't work for the CIA.

Mr. WILSON: How do you know?

COURIC: "Scooter" Libby's wife doesn't...
