| Live from . . . An ever-changing music scene
Everything changes, especially in the shifting world of live music. Last year's favorite rock haunt might no longer be around - the past few years have seen a significant number of clubs shut their doors or discontinue live music - but odds are good a new hangout has materialized to take its place. In recent months a plethora of nightspots have opened their doors, begun booking shows, or altered their musical identities. Judging from the new lay of the land, the watchwords in clubland - as in the larger music world - are diversity and accessibility. First, the bad news. Live-music casualties include the Kirkland Cafe, Tir Na Nog, and the Skybar in Somerville; Zeitgeist in Cambridge; and by the end of the month the Bulfinch Yacht Club near North Station. ZuZu in Cambridge, Common Ground in Allston, and the Baseball Tavern in the Fenway still thrive as bars but have discontinued live music.
Blaze Sends Thousands Fleeing a Las Vegas Resort
The Monte Carlo has been a middle-of-the-market option in the shadow of its more opulent, more expensive neighbor, the Bellagio. Thousands of guests were evacuated to the arena of the MGM Grand, a second property of the Monte Carlo's parent company, MGM Mirage, to be offered accommodations at other company resorts, including the Bellagio and New York-New York. It is unclear when they will be able to return to their rooms at the Monte Carlo to retrieve their belongings, said a spokesman for MGM Mirage, Alan M. Feldman. The resort will remain shut, Mr. Feldman said, until county building inspectors can assess it and determine which areas can reopen when. Mr. Feldman said he thought the two top floors of rooms and suites were occupied when the fire broke out.
Hoddle rules himself out of Saints running
GLENN Hoddle has ruled himself out of the running to become the new Southampton manager. The former England boss, who was in charge of Saints from January 2000 until March 2001, had been linked with a possible return to the club. However, the 50-year-old last night declared he would not be putting his name forward, due to his new academy project in Spain. "At the moment I am right in the middle of getting my academy up and running in Spain," he said. "While I am flattered to be linked to a return to Southampton, it isn't right for me now. "If it was not for the academy, I would definitely give it serious consideration. .
Cuomo Targets Fire Back
Voices of defiance have been few and far between as the student loan inquiry rumbled through higher education in recent months. But as the annual meeting of the National Association of College and University Business Officers came to a close Tuesday, a "town hall meeting" on student loans showcased the stories of two institutions that fought New York Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo — one that ultimately folded, and another that is still fighting, at least rhetorically. .
Extra! UIdaho Student Found Shot to Death
How many in our county are paid $30.00 to $45.00 or more an hour, including benefits? A number of them are two teacher families, and have an RV and boat parked in their driveway. The IEA is a UNION! While, there are many dedicated, excellent teachers, a lot only look at the bottom line, and are able to hold our children hostage until they get more salary and benefits. Arpie: I just got out my December 06 pay stub so I could tell you what last year looked like. At age 48, having taught since 1981, my gross pay was a little less than $46,000 last year. Subtract from that $7,000 in taxes, including social security: $6,000 for my familys health insurance, and $3,000 for my half of my retirement, and the total dwindles quickly as it does for anyone that is trying to support a family.
