| EDEX - National Higher Education and Careers EXPO
For the school leavers of today, the world is a swirl of options to choose from, be it higher education, professional qualifications or employment. Information on these choices are varied and sometimes from conflicting sources. The EDEX 2008 National Higher Education and Careers Expo organized by the Royal College Union aspires to cater to the needs of this age-group by displaying the full range of options available. Many education fairs are extremely helpful to students, with the one disadvantage being that most fairs are often carried out in Colombo. EDEX however is the only twin mega exhibition to be held in both Colombo and Kandy. The Kandy leg of the fair will be held at the Queen’s Hotel, Kandy on January 22-23, officials told the media. This 5th EDEX aspires to be bigger and better than the earlier ones.
Sask. woman wins legal battle against drug dealer
A Saskatchewan woman who says she nearly died from an overdose of crystal meth is claiming a legal victory over the man she claims sold her the street drug. Sandra Bergen was suing Clinton Davey, but earlier this month a Saskatoon judge struck down his statement of defence after he failed to answer questions in a legal proceeding. That means Davey is not in a position to dispute liability and the case will go back to court to determine damages, Bergen's lawyer Stuart Busse said. Bergen says her win may be by default, but she'll take it. "He can't go to court now and say 'I'm not responsible,'" she said Tuesday. Bergen said after she overdosed on the drug in May 2004, she nearly died of a heart attack. Then 19 years old, she spent 11 days in a coma and was left with a number of long-term physical ailments.
TBank goes international
Thanachart Bank (TBank) says it has adjusted its business position from a niche bank to an international one, targeting more corporate loans following its partnership with Canada's Scotiabank. The medium-sized bank has been concentrating on auto loans for more than 20 years, and auto hire-purchase loans make up 78.41 per cent of its overalll loan portfolio. Last year, Scotiabank became TBank's strategic partner by acquiring 24.99 per cent of Thanachart Capital, which owns 74.92 per cent of the bank. TBank now plans to "go international" with support from its new shareholder, Scotiabank, which will give it an advantage over others in the foreign banking business. With this strategy, TBank will generate better returns, said Thanachart Capital president and CEO Suphadej Poonpipat.

Now some Democrats are trying to offer a similar response to Rush Limbaugh, who used the phrase "phony soldiers" during a call-in conversation about American soldiers who oppose the war. Rep. Mark Udall authored legislation condemning the remarks, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid sent a letter to Limbaugh's boss asking him to disavow them. (He didn't.) Limbaugh, for his part, fought back on his radio show—insisting that Democrats were trying to "smear" him and purposely taking his comments out of context. How did the 2008 Democratic presidential candidates respond? Only John Edwards showed the intensity that GOP candidates did over the MoveOn controversy. Here's a breakdown of how upset everyone is: DEMOCRATS Hillary Clinton MoveOn: "I don't condone attacks on any American who has served our country honorably and with dedication the way General Petraeus has." Limbaugh: Did not comment, but signed Sen.
Markets: Bears roar in Tuesday
Oregon's '08 recession, if it comes, likely would spread pain selectively. The economic tornado would hit certain industries and products, and glance off others. Like December's flooding, economists say, it could devastate portions of Oregon and leave parts unscathed. Company managers already see some of what's coming. At Gunderson, where 1,100 people work in Northwest Portland, railcar production is slipping as cargo shrinks nationally -- but barge production is up. Across Oregon, residential construction is plunging -- but commercial and public projects are booming. Economists, resembling Northwest weather forecasters handicapped by sparse Oregon data, struggled this week to gauge gathering global forces. After overseas stock markets plunged Monday, the Federal Reserve made an emergency rate cut.
School results - Daugherty wins UPDATED
When we called the race earlier, the only official results available for the runoff were for early and absentee voting, which Daugherty carried 113-107. But workers for both candidates -- gathering votes by checking posted totals at individual precincts -- were coming up with similar tallies giving Daugherty the victory. This turnout was an increase of more than 50 percent over the first election, which Daugherty led 808-806. Two other candidates picked up 193 more votes in the first election. (The Pulaski County Election Commission had problems with its Internet provider, which hampered reporting of vote totals Tuesday night.) I drove around to a few polls myself to gather some early votes. I checked the biggest individual poll for Daugherty and Swaim in the first election and a large box with a split vote.
