Glenn Greenwald

They want to ensure that Bush, in Monday's State of the Union address, can accuse Senate Democrats of failing to act on FISA, and thus attack and mock them as being weak on national security and causing the Terrorists to be able to Slaughter Us All.

And, rather pitifully, some Democrats are shocked -- so very upset -- that, yet again, their demonstrated willingness to give the Republicans everything they demanded has not prompted a Good, Nice, Courteous Response. "We did everything you told us to do. Why are you being so mean and unfair?" That sad posture is what led even Jay Rockefeller apparently to announce that he will vote against cloture on his own bill.

Worse, even if Democrats prevent the Republicans' cloture vote on Monday, that will mean we'll just be right back to where we were before that happened: with a series of votes that will almost certainly end in the Senate with some form of retroactive immunity and vastly expanded warrantless eavesdropping powers.

Meanwhile, there was grim news from across the Tasman yesterday on inflation. Statistics New Zealand reported that prices jumped 1.2% in the December quarter alone, lifting New Zealand's inflation rate to 3.2%, despite interest rates having risen above Australia's levels.

Westpac senior economist Anthony Thompson forecast that Australia's inflation figure, to be released on Wednesday, is likely to be well above Reserve Bank's target zone, leaving it little choice but to lift rates again despite financial turmoil in the US.

Westpac predicts the figures will show that headline and underlying inflation rose 0.9 of a percentage point in the December quarter, lifting underlying inflation to 3.4%, well above the Reserve's target zone of 2 to 3%.

In trend terms, unemployment in December ranged from 3.3% in Western Australia to 5.4% in Tasmania, with all states showing significant job growth over 2007.

Jackson Browne Backs Off Support for Pro-Nuke Obama

On Capitol Hill today, there was a press conference.

Three members of Congress - Ed Markey (D-Massachusetts), John Hall (D-New York), and Shelley Berkley (D-Nevada) - were there.

Activists like Harvey Wasserman and David Fenton - were there.

And musicians including Hall, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne and Graham Nash - who were among the organizers, with Wasserman, of the 1979 No Nukes Concerts in Madison Square Garden, which played a prominent role in galvanizing citizen energy against nuclear power - were there.

Environmental leaders from NRDC, Greenpeace, U.S. PIRG, Public Citzen, Sierra Club, the Environmental Working Group, the League of Conservation Voters, among others - were there.

They made arguments against pending legislation that will grant massive loan guarantees to nuclear power companies to build new reactors.

US pawnbrokers benefit from hard times

Hard times in the US are benefiting pawnbrokers as beleaguered consumers pledge jewels, electronics and other goods in return for loans with interest rates running as high as 300 per cent a year.

Dave Adelman, president of the National Pawnbrokers Association, said the number of loans at US pawn shops had risen 15-20 per cent since October. He attributed the increase to rising fuel prices and deteriorating economic conditions – an assessment echoed by other industry executives.

“Brief and shallow downturns in the economy may benefit our business model," said Daniel Feehan, chief executive of Cash America, the biggest US pawnbroker chain, with 942 locations.

Pawnbrokers offer loans in return for personal items. Customers can buy back their property for the value of the loan plus a fee, which works out to an interest rate that can reach 300 per cent on an annualised basis, according to the NPA.

Al-Qahira Al-Youm host Amir Adib

He alleges that one account stated the accused had said he hid the murder weapon in a pile of manure, then said he took it out and threw it in the canal. Later, Sadat claims, the account says Abdel Latif says he did not remember how he committed his murders, nor did he remember where the weapon was.

Sadat adds that the shoes said to have belonged to Abdel Latif, which had traces of blood on them, were much too small for the accused.

The coroner’s report ultimately stated that the accused lacked the motive, the weapon and the opportunity to commit the murders at the said times, while another report from Abassiyya Mental Health Hospital declared that Abdel Latif was mentally competent to stand trial. (MJ)

Despite Citi woes, city plans on track

The billions in losses at Citigroup Inc., which led to Sunday's departure of chief executive officer Charles O. Prince, will not derail Citibank's expansion plans in Philadelphia, a local executive said yesterday. "From my perspective, nothing changes" in terms of Citibank's effort to become "a leader in financial services here in Philadelphia," said William E. Brown, Citibank's marketplace leader. Brown said Citibank opened its 11th branch here last week on Cottman Avenue in Northeast Philadelphia and - after opening its first here last year - planned to have 22 open by the end of the year. As all banks do, Citibank is working hard to gain favor in the communities where it opens branches. For example, Citibank was a lead sponsor, contributing $10,000 to the Education Foundation of Lower Merion's gala fund-raising event Saturday evening.

JK Harris, IRS encourage taxpayers to be more energy efficient

Well, making your home more energy efficient and getting a tax credit from the IRS for doing so. "Adding ceiling fans, window treatments such as storm windows and shutters, insulation, exterior doors, metal roofs, and gas powered dryers, water heaters and stoves can all qualify for the residential energy credit," said JK Harris and Company's Bill Wandel, an Enrolled Agent of 17 years and CPA of eight years. "The credit is 10 percent of the cumulative purchase price, but no more than $500 in total." This credit is one of the highlights of the Energy Policy Act of 2005. In order to receive the credit for making your home more energy efficient, you must purchase the products between Dec. 31, 2005 and Jan. 1, 2008. Tax credits are also available for certain vehicles. The qualified Alternative Fuel Motor Vehicle Credit was enacted by the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and includes four categories: fuel cell vehicles, advanced lean burn technology vehicles, hybrid vehicles, and alternative fuel vehicles.
